Making Radio Waves with Audition

Kyle, July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

Kyle Rolfes · Missouri Radio Ad

Having lived in Missouri my entire life, apart from a few summers, I hear so many people talk down on this wonderful state. I hear saying like, “Missouri is a flyover state”, “What’s so great about the middle of nowhere”, & “They call it misery for a reason”. That last one is a total lie but I’ll save my rant for another post. Nonetheless, people don’t know what they’re missing out on. Missouri’s outdoors rival that of almost every other state, you just need to know where to look! Missouri has more hidden gems than it does big shiny outdoor attractions like the National Parks. In my opinion, it makes our state all the better. You can enjoy a beautiful scenic hike or float trip without the masses of people or wondering if you need to buy a pass or reserve a spot!

I spent the first couple of years out of college working for a marketing firm, so I still have a love for cheesy commercials and ads. I thought that it would be a perfect opportunity to get creative with this project and do something super lighthearted. I wanted to capture more of a surprised reaction in the dialogue to get people a little more interested and to capture a similar reaction a listener might have. If you read my previous post on my initial draft, you can see the script I made for the ad. While I could spend hours talking about all the amazing outdoor opportunities Missouri has, I wanted to make sure I highlighted the main attractions. Some of these included Mark Twain National Forest, Missouri DNR State Parks, Missouri Conservation Areas, Lake of the Ozarks, & just one of the many wonder rivers we have in southern Missouri. The only change I made to the script was taking out the reaction to the question “Did you know that the best place to do both are in Missouri”. I mainly did this so it would seem more like a rhetorical question and the listener could have their reaction without someone interrupting. With some help from my peers, the biggest feedback I got was adding some cheesy infomercial music to make the commercial sound complete! I found two background songs I liked, loaded them into Audition, and began to tweak both of them to fit the audio. After I was done editing both the songs, I listened to both of them a handful of times and chose the one I thought fit the vibe of the commercial the best. Audition made it super easy to make adjustments to the sound volume and fade the song in and out for the beginning and end of the commercial.
